Collage

The collage pieces explore the way medical science interprets us as bodies. I have a collection of pictures featuring bodily interiors, courtesy of my family. These scans, mammograms and ultrasounds form a random assortment of hands, lungs and teeth in my studio. I create digital prints from these blobs and ghostly tracings and recontextualize them through collage.

Cynotypes

The color of cyanotype and its ability to capture light and saturate it into paper with its indelible blue stain, captivates me. I utilize light sensitized paper, plastic sheeting, cloth, string and invite people to interact with these materials to produce the photographs. Sometimes I’ll go back in and work into the image with ink or paint.

Faces

This latest series of work explores the most immediate way we recognize someone, by their face. Faces looks at that ever changing illusion of a fixed self. I’m thinking about what is revealed and what is hidden, by both the preponderance of selfies and the masks worn at Halloween. These are created with a digital print and altered with colored pencils.

Heart Flowers

I asked my mother’s cardiologist for pictures taken during one of her coronary angiograms. The heart flowers are emulsion transfers of a cardiac stent procedure. The procedure itself uses a contrast dye to peer into arteries and when the dye is injected, there is a blossoming effect, captured by x-ray. Images from the procedure were the motivation for this series.
